Electromagnetic momentum of an electric dipole in a uniform magnetic field
نویسنده
چکیده
The electromagnetic momentum of an electric dipole in a uniform magnetic field of strength B0 is equal to B0×p/2, where p is the electric moment of the dipole, provided the charge and current distributions generating the electric and magnetic fields are spatially separated. In the degenerate case where these distributions fully overlap, or else are concentrated in a single point, the electromagnetic momentum is equal to B0 × p/4. In all cases it does not matter whether the magnetic field is of finite or infinite extent. These results are obtained using three different methods which provide a test of the internal consistency of electrodynamics with regard to the handling of complicated singularities in the potentials, fields, and sources.

Electromagnetic momentum of a point electric dipole in a uniform magnetic field
The electromagnetic momentum of a point electric dipole in a uniform magnetic field of strength B0 of infinite extent is equal to B0 × p/4, i.e., to half the electromagnetic momentum of a macroscopic dipole of electric moment p in the same field. This result is obtained using three different methods which provide a test of the internal consistency of electrodynamics with regard to the handling ...
متن کاملThe Secret Life of the Dipole
A new force on the magnetic dipole, which exists in the presence of both electric and magnetic fields, is described. Its origin due to the ‘hidden momentum’, implications and possible experimental tests are discussed. We are familiar with the acceleration of charged particles, such as protons and electrons, by uniform electromagnetic fields. But neutral particles can be accelerated by uniform f...

A possible resolution to the question of where the nucleon gets some portion of its internal angular momentum, not carried by the valence quarks, is given in terms of the electromagnetic field angular momentum of the nucleon. This field angular momentum is similiar in origin to that of the Thomson dipole (an electric charge and a magnetic monopole), but arises from the interaction of the quark ...

متن کاملIntroducing electromagnetic field momentum
I describe an elementary way of introducing electromagnetic field momentum. By considering a system of a long solenoid and line charge, the dependence of the field momentum on the electric and magnetic fields can be deduced. I obtain the electromagnetic angular momentum for a point charge and magnetic monopole pair partially through dimensional analysis and without using vector calculus identit...
